Africa Gorilla Trips is a Uganda-based safari company specialising in tailor-made journeys across East Africa. Our roots are in southwestern Uganda, close to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Lake Bunyonyi and the road and air routes that connect the gorilla highlands with Kigali, Entebbe and the wider region. This local position shapes how we work. We do not treat a safari as a collection of attractive names. We study the trekking sector, lodge location, permit date, road conditions, border timing, park gate, flight schedule, room configuration and the pace that will make the journey comfortable for the actual people travelling.
Mountain gorilla trekking remains the foundation of the company, but East Africa offers a much wider story. A well-designed journey may connect Bwindi or Mgahinga with chimpanzees in Kibale, elephants and boat safaris in Murchison Falls, tree-climbing lions and crater landscapes in Queen Elizabeth, golden monkeys and conservation experiences in Rwanda, the Maasai Mara and Amboseli in Kenya, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro in Tanzania, the history and beaches of Zanzibar, Lake Tanganyika in Burundi or carefully assessed Grauer’s gorilla travel in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Our role is to bring these places together in a route that is geographically sensible, transparent in cost and realistic about travel time.
Our Uganda roots
Being based in Uganda gives Africa Gorilla Trips a direct relationship with the country’s parks, guides, roads, communities and gorilla regions. We understand that a permit belongs to a specific date and trekking area, and that a lodge described generally as “near Bwindi” may not be close to the briefing point printed on the permit. We know that a three-hour transfer can become longer after rain, that a border crossing needs a sensible time margin, and that a guest arriving after an overnight flight may need rest before a demanding drive. These are operational details, but they are also the details that determine whether a safari feels calm and well organised.
Our local presence continues after the booking is confirmed. The planning team coordinates with guides, accommodation partners, park authorities, transport providers and regional specialists. When an airline changes a schedule, weather affects a road, a traveler needs medical assistance or an activity must be adjusted, support comes from people who understand the written itinerary and the physical route. We see this responsibility as one of the strongest reasons to book with a locally based company.
Mountain gorillas, Grauer’s gorillas and honest imagery
Uganda and Rwanda gorilla journeys focus on the mountain gorilla, found in Bwindi and the Virunga highlands. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has both mountain gorillas in Virunga and Grauer’s gorillas, also called eastern lowland gorillas, in the forests of eastern Congo. The website follows that distinction carefully. Mountain gorilla photographs are used for Uganda and Rwanda trekking content, while Grauer’s gorilla photographs are reserved for Congo-related lowland gorilla pages. We do not use western lowland gorilla zoo portraits to represent Bwindi, Volcanoes National Park or Kahuzi-Biega.
Congo travel is proposed only when official park access, borders and professional security assessments support the route. Conditions can change, and a published page is not a promise that a departure is currently operating. When a Congo program cannot be supported responsibly, we explain the situation and recommend a suitable Uganda or Rwanda alternative.
Focused East Africa expertise
Africa Gorilla Trips concentrates on Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Burundi and selected parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This focused regional scope allows the team to build strong connections between primate forests, savannah wildlife, cities, lakes, culture and the Indian Ocean coast. It also keeps the website useful. Visitors can compare routes within one region rather than sorting through unrelated continents and islands that the company does not intend to sell.
Kenya and Tanzania add classic wildlife experiences to the gorilla foundation. The Maasai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro are not interchangeable, and the best combination depends on season, flight connections, migration region, budget and desired pace. Zanzibar can provide rest after a demanding safari, but the coast must be selected according to tides, swimming, atmosphere, family needs and preferred activities. Rwanda offers efficient access, clean cities, mountain landscapes and a compact circuit. Burundi and Lake Tanganyika can add a less familiar cultural and lakeside dimension. Every destination is included because it adds a distinct reason to travel.
Budget, mid-range and luxury journeys
We design budget, mid-range and luxury safaris without treating any category as an excuse for vague information. Budget travel protects the core wildlife and primate experiences with clean practical accommodation, efficient routing and clear inclusions. Mid-range travel generally adds stronger lodge locations, more character, better room comfort and a calmer pace. Luxury travel may use fly-in connections, premium suites, private concessions, exclusive vehicles, exceptional guiding and longer stays. The final quotation identifies the actual lodge, room type, meal plan, vehicle arrangement, permits and activities so the traveler can see what the category genuinely means.
The most expensive choice is not automatically the best choice. A beautifully marketed lodge can weaken a gorilla trip when it is far from the correct trekking sector. A road journey may be more rewarding than a flight when it passes through meaningful landscapes and avoids difficult connections. A flight may be essential when it protects a permit activity or removes an exhausting transfer. We explain these trade-offs honestly.
Private planning for different travelers
Solo travelers, couples, honeymooners, families, friends, photographers and private groups require different programs. Families need suitable room configurations, sensible driving times and activities that respect children’s ages. Photographers need patient guiding, vehicle space and fewer rushed moves. Honeymooners often value privacy, high-quality rooms and time to enjoy the lodge. Solo travelers need precise handovers and confidence about who is responsible at each stage. Travelers with limited mobility may need porter support, carefully selected rooms, shorter walks or alternative activities.
For that reason, the inquiry form asks about more than dates. We want to understand the group size, ages, interests, preferred pace, approximate budget, rooming, dietary requirements, mobility, special occasions and anything the traveler wishes to avoid. Asking careful questions before confirmation prevents avoidable problems during the journey.
How we design and support a safari
The process begins with a conversation. We review the international flights, route priorities and non-negotiable experiences. We then check permit availability, lodge space, regional flights, park access and realistic transfer times. The first proposal explains each day in long form and identifies accommodation, meals, transport, guide arrangement, permits, activities, inclusions and exclusions. The proposal can then be refined until the pace and cost feel right.
Before departure, guests receive practical guidance about travel documents, insurance, luggage, clothing, money, tipping, health preparation and activity requirements. During the safari, the professional guide manages the daily journey while the Uganda office remains available. Wildlife, weather and road conditions are natural variables, so the guide may adjust timing while protecting the confirmed core experiences.
Responsible travel and realistic promises
Gorillas, chimpanzees, lions, leopards, migration herds and river crossings are not staged. We plan for strong opportunities but do not guarantee a particular animal position or behavior. Guests are expected to follow ranger instructions, keep appropriate distances, avoid disruptive noise and ask permission before photographing people. Permits, park fees, trained guides, porters, lodges and community services can support conservation and local livelihoods when travel is managed responsibly.
